SAD SACKS Programs and Fund Raising Activities
SAD SACKS focus is on care of our nations veteran population residing in V.A Hospitals all over the country. Some of our programs include volunteering in the hospitals providing hospitality, running bingo's, Ice Cream socials, visiting the immobilized patients, providing clothing, food and funds. SAD SACKS also provides Scholarship money for our country's aspiring nurses, financial aid to Deployed Service member's families and funds for veterans homeless shelters. If your an AMVET involved in providing some of these valuable services then you need to be a SAD SACK. If you are a sevice member deployed or at home, You should become an AMVET. AMVETS PREAMBLE and What it means

The views expressed here are my personal views and I try every day to live up to some of if not all of Our Preamble. Sometimes it's a battle between personal life, work, home, and whatever! Sick or well I will always do my part in making this country stronger, safer, and secure by getting involved and staying involved. We as Veterans need to stay together, work together for the common good of our country no matter what Organization you belong to! Below is the AMVET PREAMBLE but I believe it is one shared by all the Veterans Groups in our Country. The Time has come to unite like never before! There is a whole new generation of Veterans that need our Guidance and help. I hope my words will inspire some of you that have been sitting idle letting others do the work to start getting involved. Your not just helping a less fortunate Veteran, Your helping yourself in the process.
    AMVETS PREAMBLE

WE, The American Veterans, Who have Served or are serving in the Armed Forces of the United States, During and Since World War II, Fully realizing our responsibilities to our communities, Our States and Our Nation Associate ourselves for the following purposes: 1. To Uphold and Defend the Constitution of the United States. 2. To Safeguard the principles of Freedom, Liberty, and Justice for ALL. 3. To Promote the cause of Peace and Goodwill among Nations. 4, To Maintain Inviolate the Freedom of Our Country. 5. To Preserve the Fundamentals of Democracy. 6. To Perpetuate the Friendship and Associations of all Veterans. 7. To Dedicate Ourselves to the cause of Mutual Assistance. All this is by the grace of God.
Simply Stated, "We, The AMERICAN VETERANS AND ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE PERSONNEL of the United States of Amerca have a unique bond to one and other for the rest of Our Lives. We may not all be in uniform and some of us are getting a little long in the tooth, but we do fully realize that each of us is personally responsible in service to Our Communities, Our States, and Our Nation as a whole. We Associate Ourselves to Defend the United States Constitution and Our Country from ALL Enemies both Foreign or Domestic, Just like the 56 signers of the Constitution did 200+ years ago. We still Pledge our allegiance to safeguard the Principles of Freedom, Liberty, and Justice for all. We swear an oath to maintain inviolate the Freedom of Our Country and to preserve the fundamentals of Democracy. We strive for Peace and Understanding between Nations. We must always perpetuate the Friendships and associations of all American Veterans dedicating ourselves to the cause of Mutual Aid and Assistance of every worthy American Veteran where ever They may be.
I personally try to live these words because I believe in them. We don't stop being service personnel just because we are out of the service. Our Country still needs us. So AMVETS don't stop getting involved. There is a lot of service still left in our souls and a lot of work that still needs to be done. We are the role models now. The teachers for the next veteran generations. Read over the AMVETS Preamble. Read the first section of the United States Constitution and read your oath you took before your brothers and sisters. Live up to your oath. Help out at a VA, Organize your communities for Overseas Packages, Know a Vet in trouble? Help Him. That is what its all about. Caring, Sharing, Giving. It is why God put us on this earth. Think about this!

How SAD SACKS came to be.
It all started out one Tuesday evening, the 25th of September, 1945, in the University Club in Los Angeles, California. The meeting was being held for the purpose of preparing a program for the AMVETS 1st State Convention which was to be held in Santa Barbara on the 29th of September,1945. During the course of this meeting it was suggested that the AMVETS should provide a fun organization along the lines and similar to the other Veterans Organizations. The suggestion was heartily concurred by all present. It was then suggested that the character best known and recognized by all the GI's was George Baker's Famous SAD SACK. It was decided unanomously that it would be the appropriate name for the AMVETS Fun and Honor organization. during that 1st convention, the details such as uniform, insignia, mascot and assignment of positions. Our present burlap uniform was the result of some extremely creative thinking. The Constitution and by-laws was worked on and presented the following year at the convention in St. Louis Mo. where they were approved. That was it! SAD SACKS were on their way. The 1st National Scrimmage was held in Columbus OH. September 30th to October 1st 1947. During the following years SAD SACKS units were springing up all over the country. By the Third National Scrimmage held in DesMoines IA. The Army Duck Boat was adopted as the official vehicle. The President of the United States Harry S. Truman was awarded a Life Membership to the organization because of his outstanding work for AMVETS. "Oh" by the way! here is a small snippet of trivia. In 1942 the U.S Army adopted Disney's Pluto as their Official Mascot but, what you probably don't know is that SAD SACK's Dog was named Muttsy. Yea! thats right! Not George Shultz's Snoopy! Mutsy! The Talking Dog!Thats the Story. Please Visit the various links on this page. You will be enlightened and delighted. If You are an AMVET you should get involved with SAD SACKS.
